We collect as little as we can. There are no accounts, no ads, no analytics and no tracking, and we never sell your data.
What we collect
When you buy a walk
We keep a record of the purchase: the walk, the price, the date, your email address, the PayPal order and payment numbers, and how many times your access link has been opened. We use it to email your access link, to send your links again when you ask, and to handle refunds. Your card and PayPal details are handled by PayPal and never reach us.
When you contact us
The contact form sends your name, email, phone number (if you give one) and message to our inbox by email. We use them only to answer you.
When you visit
Like every website, our server sees your IP address. We keep it in memory for a few minutes to stop abuse (for example, too many messages from one address) and don't store it with anything else. Our hosting provider may keep standard server logs for a short time.
Your location stays on your phone
When you turn on your position on a map, your browser works it out and shows it on the map. It is never sent to us or anyone else. The same goes for the compass heading.
Cookies and storage
We only use cookies the site needs to work, so we don't ask for consent to them:
- cof_key: opens a walk you bought on this device. One per walk, kept for up to 400 days.
- cof_owned: which walks you bought, so the home page can mark them. Kept for up to 400 days.
- cof_checkout: links a payment to this browser while you pay. Deleted after 3 hours.
To work without signal, the site also saves the pages, maps and photos of walks you open on your device, and remembers whether you closed the “Add to Home Screen” banner. This stays on your device, and you can remove it by clearing the site's data in your browser.
Who else handles your data
- PayPal processes payments, under PayPal's privacy statement.
- Resend delivers our emails (access links and contact form messages).
- Turso hosts the database with our walks and purchase records.
- Walk photos load from an image delivery network, without telling it which page you came from.
Maps and fonts are served through our own server, so map providers don't see your visits.
How long we keep it
Purchase records are kept for as long as your access link works and as long as the law requires us to keep sales records. Contact messages are kept only as long as needed to answer you.
Your rights
You can ask us for a copy of the data we hold about you, or ask us to correct or delete it. Write to us through the contact form or at contact@chinaonfoot.com. Deleting a purchase record also stops its access link from working.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
